Job Description
Maintains and enhances pharmacy information systems.Collaborates with Information Systems Support Analysts to plan, develop, implement, maintain and use Pharmacy related systems. Responsible for education to pharmacy and nursing department with information Systems. In charge of running QA data report for pharmacy and nursing department. May also act as a Pharmacy Technician to provide timely and accurate pharmaceutical care, including procurement, storage, preparation and distribution of medications and IV solutions, under the supervision of Pharmacy leader.
  • Accountable for collaborating with Information Systems team on Pharmacy System enhancements and maintenance by collecting and providing information, documenting observations that support system enhancement planning and implementation.  Systems include:
  • Electronic Health Record, Automatic Dispensing Machine system, IV Pump system, Packaging system, Labeling system.
  • Coordinates testing and implementation of all Pharmacy-related systems and upgrades and assists in the appropriate orientation, training and competency assessment of pharmacy staff as it relates to pharmacy informatics as directed.
  • Serves as a resource for information inquiries regarding all technical aspects of the pharmacy and related systems and provides support to staff for systems-related issue resolution and optimization
  • Audits automated dispensing device, IV pump, electronic medical record system, and all pharmacy related maintenance technology system use to evaluate appropriateness and accountability
  • Resolves pharmacy electronic system errors and assists with revenue integrity.
  • Responsible for attending hospital leadership meetings to provide recommendations as it relates to Pharmacy Information System updates and report on audit report findings
  • Act as a liaison between Pharmacy, Nursing and Medicine department to resolve, educate, answer all Pharmacy Informatics System related questions.
Qualifications

Education:

  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (for Pharmacy Technicians)
  • Bachelor degree in biology, chemistry, computer science or other pertinent degrees
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration or Registered Pharmacist

Experience:

  • Able to use a computer. General keyboard skills, general knowledge of Windows, Excel, and Word are essential.
  • Must demonstrate strong analytical skills in gathering information, defining and identifying problems, and resolving problems.
  • Must be specialized in Pharmacy Informatics System including but not limited to EPIC, Pyxis machine, Guardrails software, Alaris pump system, etc.
  • Must be able to train and educate staff.
  • Must be able to self-organize and establish priorities.
  • Able to perform the manipulative and record keeping functions involved in and related to dispensing prescriptions, manufacturing, packaging, and labeling of medication products.  May interpret and enter physician orders.  Able to perform sterile parenteral procedures using proper aseptic technique.
  • Must have the skills to produce accurate work results within established timeframes.
The ability to communicate verbally and be understood in person or on the telephone is required.  Must be able to communicate in writing and follow written instructions.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade pharmaceutical names, pharmaceutical calculations and laws and regulations. Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery procedures.  Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, and record keeping of medications.  Knowledge of and the ability to carry out calculations for common dosage determination.  Knowledge and understanding of the identification of medications, medication dosages, routes of administration, dosage forms, and storage requirements.  Requires a basic working knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards including TJC (The Joint Commission), Title XXII, DHS, DEA, FDA and USP.

Special Requirements:

  • In-depth knowledge of patient/healthcare information systems.
  • At least 3 years related experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.  At least 3 years focused experience in Pharmacy Informatics is desired.
  • Must have history of leadership experience in Pharmacy Informatics System and attend hospital leadership meetings related to Pharmacy Informatics System.
