Job Description

About the Position:
United States Military Entrance Processing Center (US MEPCOM), with headquarters in Building 3400, Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes (North Chicago), IL, is a joint service command under the direction of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy and is staffed by representatives of all branches of the Armed Forces. The command, through its 65 Military Entrance Processing Stations, determines whether applicants are qualified for enlistment based on standards set by each of the services. Two geographic sectors provide intermediate management in operating the MEPS. The Eastern Sector Headquarters and Western Sector Headquarters are co-located with the Command Headquarters.
This position will be filled on a permanent basis.

DUTIES: Back to top As an Information Technology Specialist (Operating Systems), GS-2210-12 you will be responsible for the following:

  • Design, coordinate, and implement the day-to-day systems engineering technology projects in which systems are typically available from vendors and widely used.
  • Analyze systems requirements in response to business requirements, risks, and costs by working directly with management and system administrators.
  • Identify and anticipate virtual machine (VM) and physical server performance, availability, capacity or configuration problems in operating systems (e.g., AIX TL6 or higher/RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHELv6) or higher), backup solutions such as Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and Symantec NetBackup, and in newer-fielded advanced Information Technology (IT) systems.
  • Ensure that inquiries and problems concerning access, use, and availability of systems engineering technologies are expeditiously resolved; develop and enhance automated/operating system (OS) processes to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Serve as the Team Lead, responsible for personnel within team and performance and effectiveness of team members; provide guidance to system administrators, analysts, and teams.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. To qualify, applicants must possess Information Technology (IT) related experience demonstrating each of the following four competencies: (1) Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attention to detail. (2) Customer Service: Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. (3) Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information; make clear and convincing oral presentations; list to others, attend to nonverbal cues, and respond appropriately. (4) Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determine accuracy and relevance of information; use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations. IT related experience is demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (IT certification.)
AND have one year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled such as: Administering, configuring, and maintaining an Advanced Interactive eXecutive (AIX), Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and Satellite server infrastructure; administering, configuring, and maintaining a RHEL/Satellite solution; configuring and maintaining virtual RHEL servers; monitoring backups and data usage while providing troubleshooting and problem resolutions; and utilizing skills to manage in all aspects of AIX, RHEL, and Satellite server technologies.
The definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge in administering Advanced Interactive eXecutive (AIX) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating systems
  • Skill in Satellite server configuration and administration
  • Skill in providing complex server solutions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Satellite servers
  • Ability to effectively communicate

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-11 grade (or equivalent).

  • The position requires you to obtain and maintain a CompTIA Security+ (or equivalent) certificate within six months of hire date.
  • The position requires you to obtain and maintain a Computing Environment (CE) Certificate (RHELv6 or equivalent) within six months of hire date.
  • This position may require you to occasionally work hours that include evenings or weekends.
