The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Chapter seeks an accomplished leader to serve as our Puget Sound Conservation Director to help us address the region’s most pressing conservation issues as we conserve land, water and wildlife and create a sustainable future for the Puget Sound region and beyond. The Puget Sound Conservation Director provides a visible leadership presence in the region and represents the Chapter’s interests throughout Puget Sound. S/he has overall responsibility for developing strategy, ensuring results, and managing the Puget Sound team’s internal functions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Puget Sound Conservation Director leads the development and implementation of cutting edge, high impact conservation strategies that achieve tangible conservation outcomes across the Puget Sound region and serve as demonstration projects with global influence. S/he is a visible leadership presence in Puget Sound and represents the Chapter’s interests in the region, with overall responsibility for developing strategy, ensuring results and managing the Puget Sound team’s internal functions.

Responsibilities include: a) creating, testing and promoting scientifically rigorous and innovative approaches to land and water conservation; b) developing and strengthening high level relationships with regional thought leaders, public agencies, private partners and the local business community; c) linking funding requirements to the priorities of individuals, foundations and state/federal agencies; and, d) developing and implementing outreach efforts that engender community support for the Chapter’s objectives in the Puget Sound Region.

The Puget Sound Conservation Director is responsible for defining the long-term conservation plan, developing the strategy for accomplishing the conservation wins defined, and successfully implementing that plan. In this capacity, s/he has significant strategic thinking, and inter-departmental relations responsibilities and personnel management. S/he will lead a team of experts from across the chapter and partner organizations to accomplish conservation outcomes across the region. In this role s/he will be responsible for effectively using and guiding all appropriate resources for the programs, including conservation practitioners, scientists, marketing, philanthropy, government relations, and grants resources. The Puget Sound Conservation Director has significant programmatic, supervisory and budgetary management responsibilities. It will be to the Puget Sound Conservation Director, as the leader of this team, that the State Director and Deputy State Director will look to for full responsibility of the program. The Director of Conservation Programs also is a member of the Chapter’s Senior Management Team, which is ultimately responsible for establishing the Chapter’s priorities and accounting for its results. S/he will report to the Deputy State Director.

POSITION DUTIES

Establish effective external relationships with government, business, tribal and non-profit leadership to achieve large scale conservation outcomes across the region.
Develop and lead a high impact team focused on implementing regional initiatives and catalyzing broad-scale conservation action.
Work with the Senior Management Team to establish the strategic direction of the Washington Chapter, set annual operational plans/budgets, track progress towards stated objectives, evaluate outcomes, and assess emerging priorities;
Lead and manage all aspects of the Puget Sound conservation programs including oversight of a matrixed team and management of operational and capital budgets toward the achievement of clear conservation outcomes;
Build the credibility and reach of TNC as a thought-leader and the go-to environmental organization across Puget Sound Region.
Support the Chapter’s philanthropy department efforts to raise private funds in support of Conservancy priorities in Washington and beyond.
Support the Conservation and Conservation Finance Committees of the Chapter’s Board of Trustees including vetting specific programs and acquisitions and shepherding major strategic issues to the full Board for consideration.
Ensure that the Puget Sound region’s conservation efforts complement and leverage those of the other regions with Washington State, the Nature Conservancy World Office, and the Western region.
Participate, on an as-needed basis, in other chapter-wide, regional or global task forces/ initiatives, as assigned by the state director or deputy state director.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS degree and 7-10 years of experience in conservation practice, natural resources management, or related business or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with certain aspects of fundraising: identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
Experience directing a major program of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams.
Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.); experience with high-level conservation and/or government contacts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

10-12 years of experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 7 years of experience in leading and managing complex conservation programs.
Advanced degree (M.S., PhD) in a field integral to natural resource conservation, including but not limited to: ecology, biology, environmental sciences, law, and/or public policy.
Demonstrated understanding of and/or experience with the political landscape, business and agricultural communities, and the social and environmental concerns of the Puget Sound region.
Proven ability to manage, motivate and inspire staff. Demonstrated skill in creating and leading productive teams.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex conservation issues and The Nature Conservancy’s mission and goals to a wide range of audiences.
Ability to prioritize work and meet objectives and deadlines without close supervision.
Ability and willingness to travel frequently and on short notice; and to work on evenings and weekends as needed.
Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the state and/or country level.
Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives and experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
Motivating team members, setting goals and leading efforts.
Delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers.
Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs; politically savvy.
Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
Demonstrated success as an inspirational manager who has successfully motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence.
Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
