Bootstrapping A Blog

In Don’t Raise Money – Bootstrap A Niche Market Online , we talked about niche markets.  Now, let’s look at bootstrapping that niche by taking that big leap and developing your own blog.

First, you will need to decide: what is your niche? You should zero in on the niche you believe you could excel in.  If you are an expert or have special knowledge of some field or have a  passion for something, start your blog on that. If you keep current, write well and with passion, update often and are open with your readers, you will find an audience.

My inspiration for a website topic, which later also evolved into a blog topic, was a study I was asked to do for the University of Texas at San Antonio business department.  This was in 1994 and they had a lot of very rough, raw material ( like clippings from newspapers) which suggested men make more money than women, even when they own their own business. The term “glass ceiling” had only recently become part of America’s vocabulary and the phenomenon was just beginning to be explored.

It was at this time, in December of 1994, that Netscape introduced the graphical browser and opened up the rush to the Net.

I decided to combine my interest in writing about “leveling the playing field”, with my entrepreneurial drive to launch yet another business on the cutting edge of the newest frontier, which, in this instance was the Net.  I knew I had the interest and the passion to sustain it.

So the question is, “What turns you on?  What sets you on fire or gets your adrenalin pumped?”  That will be your niche.

Step One: Carve out your niche and pick a catchy title that captures the essence of your blog. . Do some brainstorming and toss it around with your friends. Take a look at Ajaxwhois.com, a domain name finding software, to jump start your naming process.

Select A Blog Type

There are many different choices of blog types  from journal blogs, to collaborative and topical blogs ( Chris Brogan‘s new group blog, OMGPittsburgh.com is both collaborative and topical ) and compilation of link blogs ( Alltop StartUp News is both a compilation of links and a topical blog although the startup business topic is very broad.) There are also photoblogs, which can be  successful if you are good and prolific photographer and are articulate about the process and results.  But whatever kind of blog you decide to develop, successful blogs find a niche and stick with it.

Marketability

The next consideration is to make sure the subject of your blog is marketable.  Is there a large enough audience out there who might want to buy something from your site to assure you a cash flow, and ultimately, one which will sustain you?

There are a number of ways to generate revenue from your site but the results of each them will depend on how much traffic you are able to generate so….

The Process

Keep up to date and listen in to what’s going on, particularly on the Net, in your niche.

How to Write a Famous Blog offers the following advice:

  • “Look around the Internet for blogs you love. Read and post to them religiously. Leave a note that actually has something to do with their site so that they know you actually took the time for pay attention to the material posted; do not expect anything back in return. Just commenting will cause others to be more likely to visit your and do the same. Often when you make comments to sites a link to your own personal site will already be included with your comment, unless you are posting from one hosting site to the next. If you’re at ITW and you read a blog on Myspace then it would be appropriate to include such a link.
  • Build a network with other people in the blogosphere – make friends online. This is the best way to get readers and a great way to meet people you would otherwise never know.”

Gather your audience or your targeted demographic the particular people who are likely to be most interested in what you are writing about

  • “A good way to make a popular blog is to make other blogs popular. That is, visit, read, and thoughtfully comment on other people’s blogs. On most blogger sites, a link to your own blog will be automatically included in your comment. So the more blogs you post on, the more people will be driven to visit your blog. Of course, don’t just go on and post one-word spam, because that might keep people away.
  • Linking to other established or authority websites is also a good way to network and make yourself known in your niche, and other bloggers to share the “link love” with people who link to their site.”

Ways To Monetize Your Site

Whatever product or service you choose to sell, it should be tightly tied in with your theme or niche.  That is how you are identified in search engines and links throughout the Net and why people are coming to visit your site.  AdvancingWomen.com, for example, which focuses on women in business and careers, could probably not sell a single Red Sox baseball cap from its site. Not that there may not be women out there who are afficionadas of AdvancingWomen.com and also would like a Red Sox baseball cap, but that is not where they go to look for it.  So stick to your niche when selling.

What AdvancingWomen.com can and does sell, however, and you can as well, is…

Advertising related to your demographic.

Google Adsense allows you to open an account and include their automated ad delivery which will be match your content. You also can find other ad delivery systems through Google.com, if you’re interested.

Product or Services related to your demographic. You can also Google for these.  Bear in mind, you can select almost any product under the sun and sell as an affiliate through Amazon.com. You can also open your own storefront on Amazon.com.

Identifying a Well Matched Product Or Service For Your Demographic

To take a photoblog as an example, iStockphoto.com, the internet’s original member-generated image and design community, has changed the economic landscape of buying and selling photos online, ( see Crowdsourcing for details of this phenomenon).  So you should take their pricing into consideration, when deciding what to sell from your site. You may want to sell camera equipment or other related items which have the advantage, for you, of being higher ticket items and therefore more profitable for you.

You can also identify various vendors like CafePress.com which allow you to sell personalized T-shirts, buttons, bags and other items.

As your audience grows, your ability to sell will grow and so will the number of vendors approaching you to sell their items.  Be patient. Write well. And write every day. Success will follow.

How Do I Do This Faster & Easier? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies

If you’re a “newbie” just wanting to “dip your toe” into the swirling waters of the blogosphere, presumably you’ve already read How do I Do This? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies which attempts to set out the very basics of how to get started.  If you’ve gotten that far along and have a WordPress account and have your site installed and set up, I’m going to tell you an easy way to start writing your blog.

Writing your content on WordPress. Once you’ve gotten your feet wet and are comfortable with the program – perhaps a month of two from when you begin – you should probably try to put in greater originality and more of your own thoughts and stories.  But to begin, I would suggest the following 3 support steps for you:

  • Set Up A Reader to scour the Net for material that interests you and about which you have some comment, thought or opinion to make.

Blogging takes time.  And keeping up with news and other blogs so you have something to blog about takes time.  So it’s highly recommended you set up a Google reader, or any other kind of reader to bring blogs or your favorite kind of information and news to you, instead of you going out and searching the Net to track it down. (This will also allow you to get more familiar with the blogosphere: the most popular blogs and bloggers, the most popular topics, the different styles which bloggers use.)

Just go to Google and create an account, or log in if you already have one and get the free reader. Go to your favorite sites and look for an orange button indicating a feed. Then you put the RSS feeds of your favorite sites into the Google Reader.  Sometimes this process is automated so you will be asked how you want the feed delivered and in this instance you would select Google Reader.  This will save an enormous amount of time for you. And I’m told successful bloggers peruse a huge number of sites daily. ( I could give you some numbers but it can get kind of scary how much the top bloggers read and how hard they work.)

  • ShortcutPress This!: Post from wherever you are on the web

A Press This bookmark you can add to your toolbar provides a fast and smart popup to do posts to your WordPress blog as you’re surfing the web:

The Press This bookmarklet is found at the right bottom of the Write Posts panel. Drag and drop it onto your Favorites, Bookmarks, or Links list or toolbar. To activate, simply click on the “Press It” bookmarklet link. A window will open with the URI of the current site displayed, and the site’s title as your post title. Here’s what it looks like:

For example, if you click “Press This” from a Youtube page it’ll magically extract the video embed code, and if you do it from a Flickr page it’ll make it easy for you to put the image in your post. Not to mention using it with regular text posts where you just copy and paste the portions you want to comment on, write your own thoughts in and Voila!  You’re done.

How Do I Do This? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies

Ok.  We get it. After posting Shall We Talk? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies, we learned a thing or two about your needs.  Although we know there are bloggers galore on every topic imaginable out there, there are also a number of you who are just stopped cold at the thought of starting a blog.  You might like to, but it seems too complex, too involved, too frustrating, too….whatever.

You’ve probably heard that saying: “To anyone whose only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” (Kind of like tunnel vision or having blinders on when it comes to others’ perspectives.)  To those of us who’ve already taken the high dive off the cliff and into the warm and welcoming waters of the blogosphere, the whole process seems rather user friendly and simple.  We perhaps forget where we started from.

I remember the first time I ever looked at a WordPress page, with no training and no preparation.  I thought “What on earth is this and how am I supposed to learn it”?  ( I think mild panic sets in at the first glance of the unknown, particularly when we know we’re supposed to do something with it…….like produce a published page, but how do your do that?)

I know Arthur, one of our blog readers, commented that he liked the post, Shall We Talk? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies, and thought it was great to challenge women to make their own blog and create a community but regretted that the process was too complicated and long:

“I wonder if a step by step approach wouldn’t have been easier to follow…In a perfect world there will be some videos made from actions on both main platforms (Blogger and WordPress).”

Well, this post is an attempt to make the process easier for Arthur and all the hopeful bloggers, many of them women, for whom he speaks.  If any of you can add to this or enrich it with your own expertise or experience please do. For now, let’s see if we can break this down into bite size pieces:

1.  Free WP installation

There are sites out there which specialize in WordPress and will install and set up or transfer your WordPress site free.  One such site is SiteGround.com You have to get hosting with them at $5.95 a month. But you also get Free WordPress themes and WordPress tutorial. That sounds to me like a good way to get your feet wet.  They say they are the #1 WordPress Host, but there are probably others who offer the same services.

2. Gettting Started With WordPress tutorials

When you sit down, shake off that little twinge of “beginner’s anxiety”, and start to use it, WordPress has extremely intuitive administration: you will be able to compose a post and publish it on your website with just one click! The following are 2 different tutorials, both using screen shots, but the second is video, so also has a guide talking you through the process.

SiteGround.com offers an Easy Start tutorial with screen shots of every action telling you exactly where to go and what to click, step by step. It very clearly explains and shows a graphic of each of the following:

Shall We Talk? Easy Blogging For Blog Newbies

Ok. This post is not for all you bloggers on the Jedi Warrior level. We know you know how to blog. This is for all those out there, and particularly women, who have a lot they want to say and just haven’t gotten the hang of blogging yet. ( We’re telling you this because, as you know by now, if you have been reading this blog, we are encouraging women to jump on to the Net and develop their own communities and blogs in support of other women.)

Maybe you haven’t started your own blog yet because you’re intimidated. Maybe you’re just discovering the blogosphere. Whatever the reason, we can almost guarantee there is such an ease and an immediacy and a sense of shared community with similarly minded bloggers, that once you start, you’ll be hooked, like the rest of us.

Whether you want to start a business or a women’s community or a news magazine, you can blog.

The start up is the hardest part – which is probably true of most things – and it is not so much hard as detailed.

If you want to spend a lot of time weighing your platform options and strategies, Choosing a Blog Platform at ProBlogger will walk you through all that. You may want a hosted blog at a company like Blogger or a stand alone platform powered by WordPress.org or MovableType or one of many others. You may want to build your own brand ( highly recommended) , and if you do, you will need a stand alone platform. Personally, I prefer WordPress.org. It is feature rich, continuously updated, with thousands of man hours in development time. It boasts communities of developers offering plug ins which automate hundreds of the most useful tasks imaginable, from SEO ( search engine optimization so your blog can be found) to spam catching to putting in Google Adsense or Yahoo ads on every post. New plug ins are offered almost daily and there is ample support for whatever your needs are. There are many ways to customize the plugins, widgets, and themes or change them with a single click. And did I mention, it’s free?

There are several ways to set up your WordPress.org blog.

WordPress.org offers its own Quick Start Guide, which, incidently points out the advantages of self hosting. It’s pretty straight forward and intuitive, with a well known “5 minute install”, but if you’re not comfortable with mildly techie tasks, such as using ftp, this is probably not for you.

Making A WordPress Blog adds screen shots to the process of walking you step by step through the set up of your blog, using a hosted platform at WordPress.com. Simpler, ( since there’s no ftp or techie tasks involved) but still, possibly not what you want if you are trying to build your own brand, which, one day, you hope to sell.

Paying a pro WordPress guru a couple of hundred bucks to install your blog is simple, stress free and a good investment. We Fix WP Blogs is one example of a provider who can perform this task for you, simply, seamlessly and relatively inexpensively. I just used We Fix WP Blogs for a pretty extensive installation of mine – 3 blogs – so I can personally recommend them. And the bonus is that you will have a WP guru already familiar with your blog, should you ever need help, an upgrade, to migrate servers or simply some quick advice on the fly. There are a number of WP gurus out there, some mentioned on the WP site and others you may have to Google to locate.

Once you’re at this point, you just have to be able to write in plain English ( or French or German or Spanish or whatever language you speak.) Although the program is really intuitive and very simple to learn you can return to Quick Start Guide or Making A WordPress Blog with screen shots, to walk you step by step through the process of writing your content, saving it, then publishing it to the Net.

Whatever moves you or stirs you, motivates or inspires you, we want to see it on the Net, in your blog. When you fulfill yourself, we are all one step closer to fulfilling ourselves and to creating real progress on the Net. So start your blog. And please do share your story and experience with us.

Yes, Some Blogs Are *Very* Profitable – And Some Of Them Are Women’s Blogs

Yes, some blogs are profitable – very profitable.

Some are not only profitable,  they have actually helped created a relaible revenue stream for other women through blogging, for which AdvancingWomen.com applauds them.

In a major slice of good news for women on the Internet/blogging scene, Lisa Stone co-founded and took on the position of CEO of BlogHer, an online blogging community for women, with more than 13,000 members and 10,000 blogs on their blog list, reaching more than eight million women each month via their community hub at BlogHer and their  publishing syndicate of more than 1,500 blogs . Stone , who appears to be somewhat of a super star in the world of blogging, had previously helped launch three sponsored blogging networks: American Lawyer Media| Law.com’s legal blog network (2004), followed by Knight Ridder Digital’s Thatsracin.com (2005), and, one she recommended as a consultant, Glam Media (2005). Also, as  executive producer and Editor in Chief/VP, Programming for Women.com (acquired by iVillage in 2001), she launched an 18-channel network and helped grow it to a Top 30 site.  So, it probably should come as no great surprise that Stone figured out a way for women to actually make money with their blogs.  She and her partners created a successful commercial enterprise via BlogHer’s Ad Network, where BlogHer works with bloggers to provide quality sponsors and advertisers with an opportunity to support communities of women online, and women who blog with an opportunity to pay themselves. Others have gotten into the blog advertising game as well.  One reason is that with the low operating expenses of blogs, many are able to self-sustain through advertising and not be forced to sell off little chunks of themselves, at least in the beginning, to venture capitalists for funding. “Federated Media Publishing, the brainchild of former Industry Standard Publisher John Battelle, operates as a sort of uberblog, selling advertising and carrying out business functions for a stable of 130 independent blogs and related online media.

The emerging business model is to start by selling advertising and build from there with events, subscriptions or product sales. And with audiences growing at double- or triple-digit rates, ad prices are soaring for top blogs.

“Since  2005, when Silicon Valley entrepreneur Michael Arrington started TechCrunch, his popular blog on Internet startups as a labor of love, it has grown  to  a full-time staff of eight with a  CEO, 1.25 million visitors and $240,000 per month in advertising revenues, not including additional revenue from conferences and parties.”

AdvancingWomen.com would call that pretty profitable.

“When we started selling advertising in this space late in 2005, it was very experimental and risky. We were able to get maybe $4 or $5″ per 1,000 page views, Battelle, said. “For the same impressions we were selling then, we are now on average $20 to $30.”

On the other side of the coin, blogging businesses can make money because their overhead is low. “It’s dirt cheap to operate, which makes break-even incredibly achievable,” said  Jon Callaghan a partner with True Ventures, a Palo Alto venture capital firm that has invested in Om Malik’s technology news blog GigaOm.

Right now, it’s rare for even the most successful blogging operations to employ more than a dozen full-time staff members. Computer power and bandwidth get cheaper all the time. And a headquarters is not essential.

“There are no offices. It’s all virtual,” Daily Kos‘ Markos Moulitsas said about his site .

One success story

TechCrunch illustrates the new blogging math. It sells sponsorships that allow advertisers to display on the home page at $10,000 per month. It also uses Federated Media to sell display ads, keeping 60 percent of the revenue. And it charges $200 to list in its Cool Jobs section, getting about five or six want ads per day. Parties and conferences add another income source. Last month, TechCrunch organized a two-day event at the Palace Hotel that gave 40 startups a platform to tout their wares.

And, as far as spending goes, “our costs are only headcount,” Arrington said.

As blogs mature and start producing good cash flow, they often create additional blogs or new sites, forming networks with multiple products and a common brand identity. For example, GigaOm now offers four additional blogs, all with a common brand, and its staff has grown to 10 full-time employees.

“You’re seeing small media groups being created,” said Paul Walborsky, GigaOm‘s  chief operating officer. “This is the next evolution.”

The mean annual revenue is $6,000 with $75K+ in revenue for those with 100,000 or more unique visitors per month. Note: median investment and revenue (which is listed below) is significantly lower. They are also earning CPMs on par with large publishers.

Content Is King Morphs Into Publishing It Marketing

The landscape has changed … In order to maximize the opportunity of amplifying your organizations signal ( or your individual profile) in this shifting media landscape, you must think strategically about how publishing can help you achieve your goals and objectives.

This insight dovetails nicely with the “Blow Your Own Horn – Project Your Achievements” concept. With some planning transforming into the “publishing is marketing” model is achievable for any individual or company.

Individuals and marketers have always published content , but its the landscape that has changed, not the concept of publishing. It is the way that the content that we publish is consumed, the way that it moves around the social web, and is globally syndicated that is different. This landscape has also opened up other forms of content for organizations and individual to produce, specifically you can now add audio and video content to the already rich mix of blog posts, articles, white papers, research and surveys, etc.. These are mediums that once had a very large barrier to entry and were commonly associated with heavy production budgets. Not anymore.

The challenge is how to go about it: how to produce a continuous flow of blog posts, white papers, research briefs, surveys, webinars, and audio & video (new media). These are some of the core published products that any individual or organization can take advantage of in the new media landscape. Each one serves a key role to the overall marketing mix, and each can be seamlessly promoted using the tools of the social web.

Hence the question, how do you create a publishing machine that stays not only on schedule but also stays aligned with your marketing or self promotion objectives?

One of the first and foremost considerations is your talent.

Can you write well? Then blog. Can you talk intelligently about your product, service or industry? Then hit the record button and publish a regular podcast. The barriers to entry are just too low not to be taking advantage of these mediums.  All that said, content is key.

Just remember, this isn’t a game for being just the sizzle, you have to be the steak at the same time. You may find it challenging at first to organize your content creation processes, but that will become a matter of habit.  To complete in a crowded blogosphere and get noticed, and more important, respected for your viewpoint, you must publish on a frequent basis.  That’s what the most popular pros do.  And with a little focus and determination, you can become one of them
