Girlfriend Book Club: A Perfect Escape for Mama
Love to read but need something a little jucier than "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie"...join a book club and if you don't know of any then start one. . Feel like an adult again with novels like Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik. Let's review the basics.
What is a book club?
A book club is a club where people usually meet to discuss a book that they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. More known as book discussion clubs, which are usually held in libraries, bookstores, etc.
Since we are all about having fun and enjoying "me-time" this definition sounds a little stiff. How about this: a group of women meeting to laugh, debate and express their opinions about a common book they have read all while eating good food and drinking yummy drinks both of which may or may not be related to the theme, setting, time period of the book.
Aaaah... that sounds much more appealing.
Setting The Mood
When inviting your girlfriends to join the book club it is important to be sure all the members have the same goals:
-To read some good books you may not have read on your own (fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, self help, etc.)
-To engage in adult conversation centered around the theme, settings, and characters of the chosen book
-To enjoy good food and drinks and time away from housework, children and work!
-To learn new things about my girlfriends ? books can bring out very passionate opinions about all sorts of issues
How To Pick a Book
In my research for this article I came across a great website www.girlfriendbooks.com
This
site is filled with book suggestions for all types of interests and genres with one common thread ? they all appeal to women.
Ideas for Parties
To give you some ideas here are a few of the books/party ideas I have used in my book club:
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
As a new age dawns in England's twelfth century, the building of a mighty Gothic cathedral sets the stage for a story of intrigue and power, revenge and betrayal.
Our Discussion Party: We served drumsticks, loaves of bread and ale. This is such a great book full of sex, violence and humor. This is a book I never would have picked up on my own but has turned out to be one of my all time favorite books!
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
A gooey love story set in North Carolina and the South.
Our Discussion Party: We had a southern belle theme. "Spiked Lemonade", finger foods, strawberry shortcake.
Just a few ideas for you but the options are endless. Our rule is we take turns picking the book and whoever picks the book hosts the party and everyone brings one discussion question. I hope you find this useful in starting your own book club.
