Establishing yourself in business will require that you take some time to conduct a self-evaluation and honest appraisal of your personal and business needs. You are far more likely to succeed and to deal with business problems or issues if you understand your needs and have tailored your business goals around your own set of skills, talents and ideals. Here are four important factors to consider as you tailor your business goals to your specific needs and lifestyle.
1. Income. Many entrepreneurs go into business in order to achieve financial security. When setting your goals identify how much money you want to earn during your first year of operation and then each year thereafter, up to five years. Generally you would increment each year by about 25%, however, if you have done some careful market research, you may wish to set your goal higher. It is easy to set your first year goal higher than is realistic, so review your goals often and make adjustments where needed.
2. Lifestyle. There are many points to consider as part of your lifestyle including: travel, hours you will be working, whether or not you are investing your personal or family assets, geographic location, technology and connectivity, family or personal obligations, etc. If your new business is going to involve travel, are you willing to travel extensively and have access to services or airports to facilitate your travel? How many hours (per day / week) are you willing to work? If you are investing personal assets, which ones are you willing to risk?
3. Type of Work. When setting your goals identify, for the type of work you are going to do, whether you like working outdoors, or in an office, with computers or on the phone, with lots of people or independently, and so forth. Considering all of this will help you to determine not only your office setup but it may help to redefine your business goals or even help to identify the type of business you should pursue.
4. Satisfaction. Let’s face it; many people go into business to satisfy their egos or to achieve a higher level of job satisfaction. Owning a successful business can be very gratifying. You need to decide how important job satisfaction, or your ego, is to you and what business will best fill that need.
The most important factor to consider when going into business is to be honest with yourself and to conduct a complete self-evaluation of your needs. You will be far more successful and achieve more if you conduct an honest appraisal of your strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. Using this honest, open approach will let you confront any decisions or problems in your business with a greater level of confidence and ultimately, better your chances for success.
