The Senior Manager of External Communications role is within the Corporate Communications framework of the company, supporting the Commercial Banking line of business of Capital One, a FORTUNE 500 company and one of FORTUNE’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

The Senior Manager will provide ongoing public relations support for the Commercial & Specialty Finance group in Capital One’s Commercial Bank, which manages a $40 billion loan portfolio and serves more than 4,100 clients and 35,000 accounts through a relationship-based banking model. The position reports to the Senior Director, External Communications.

The Senior Manager will have exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills, expertise in relationship-building, solid media relations experience, possess strong executive presence, and have good project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once.

Responsibilities:

– Strengthen and leverage the Specialty Finance group’s relationship with top-tier, trade and regional news organizations, as well as key bloggers and other thought leaders;
– Support interviews and other interactions with external media, providing counsel, messaging support and media training, as needed;
– Write and edit communications materials, including press releases, media alerts, thought leadership, social media content and other communications documents;
– Plan and execute public relations programs for the Specialty Finance line of business for Capital One Bank, reporting to Corporate Communications;
– Coordinate with communications team supporting Capital One’s signature community programs and initiatives in the Mid-Atlantic region;
– Coordinate media outreach, leveraging key contacts and managing relationships to prioritize and qualify media opportunities in national and regional dailies, wires, business periodicals, broadcast media, online/social media outlets and industry trades;
– Understand each applicable team’s operating environment and develop strategic communications initiatives to further Capital One Bank’s reputation as an industry leader;
– Work effectively in cross-functional teams to advance external communications strategy;
– Assess risks, issues, and potential communications problems and provide proactive solutions;
– Serve as PR liaison with professional and vendor partners.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s Degree; Communications, Journalism, English or Marketing/Public Relations or Military experience;
– Six years of media relations/external communications experience;
– Six years of experience working in an external communications role, with a proven track record for developing and implementing successful strategies and providing external communications counsel to business leaders.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Eight years of media relations/external communications experience;
– Eight years of experience working in an external communications role, with a proven track record for developing and implementing successful strategies and providing external communications counsel to business leaders.
– Experience working for a leading brand within financial services or packaged/consumer goods industry;
– Strong written/verbal communications skills (writing sample required);
– Ability to present complex subject matter in a clear, compelling manner;
– Proven ability to manage media interviews for senior executive officers, including national television, radio, global print/broadcast media and all trade publications;
– Strong understanding of the public relations industry, and related knowledge of key trade publications and local and national outlets;
– Experience in online/social media outreach and campaigns;
– A strong business background, as well as excellent managerial skills;
– Proven ability to work effectively with multiple constituents, including peers, executive management, and senior management;
– Ability to manage rapidly changing priorities;
– Creative, integrative problem-solving and structured thinking;
– Solid issues management experience;
– Self-motivated with strong organizational skills, analytical talent and attention to detail;
– Excellent presentation skills;
– Ability to manage pressure, meet deadlines and monitor and evaluate results;
– Prior experience working with agencies and large partnerships;
– Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and media analysis tools.
