Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer

University of California Office of the President

The University of California, Office of the President invites qualified candidates for the position of Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. As California’s research university and one of the state’s largest employers, our campuses are routinely ranked among the best in the world.

Reporting directly to the President, the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer is a visionary leader providing guidance, counsel and support in business operations for the campuses, medical centers, DOE Laboratories and the University of California Office of the President. The individual provides management and leadership to the following departments: Human Resources, Information Technology Services, UCPath Center, Energy and Sustainability, Program Management and Administrative Services. Acting as a change agent, drives initiatives internally and including partnering with legislators, industry and internal constituents.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leadership of Policies, Systems and Procedures -Directs the development of business operating and administrative policies, procedures and practices which support the mission of UC.
  • Oversight and Management – Acts as an advisor to the Board of Regents on aspects of business operations and management including the effect of regulatory changes and the most efficient use of systems and human resources.
  • Management of an operating budget of approximately $100 million leading a staff of 500 including seven direct reports, with total staff expected to grow to approximately 900 over the next few years as the UC Path Center expands to meet demand.

Qualifications for this role include 10 years operational experience in a large, complex business, government or non-profit organization, preferably in a distributed environment and a Master’s degree in Business or equivalent. The ability to establish relationships with a broad range of constituents and demonstrated political acumen and experience working in government relations is essential. A track record of identifying and implementing administrative process changes and improvements with strong leadership abilities is required.
