The top industries in the area are healthcare/biomedical, military, tourism and agribusinesses. Accounting for nearly ten billion dollars in revenue a year, the medical/biomedical industry employs over 100,000 people, and workers in the field account for 16 percent of the total wages paid in the city. There are three major military medical centers, a dozen church-affiliated and private hospital systems and the Texas Research Park and the 900-acre south Texas Medical Center, comprising nearly 80 health-related entities.
San Antonio’s aerospace industry includes a range of businesses that manufacture aircraft parts and equipment, service and repair aircraft, produce and distribute transportation equipment and supplies, and provide air transportation.
The information technology (IT) industry in San Antonio has been one of the fastest-growing sectors of the local economy. San Antonio IT businesses include makers of components (including silicon chips), equipment providers and vendors, and a large computer services sector.
