Writing for the Web

Web A Vast and Easy Market for Writers To Break into

The Internet market is huge and every day it gets bigger. The writing aspect of that market is also huge. Each and every website on the Net needs content and generally has to hire someone to produce it. This is a particularly favorable market for freelancers since may websites prefer not to increase their payroll with full time writers and rely on outsourcing. That's where you, the writer, comes in.

To get a handle on where you and your particular writing interests and skills will fit in you first might try to understand the breadth and depth and sheer variety of the market you are approaching. As Melissa Brewer , a full-time freelance writer and author of The Writer's Online Survival Guide, http://www.webwritingbuzz.com, notes:

"Understanding the web writing markets is crucial to success for online writers. Many writers get frustrated because they can't find work or don't know where to start. An understanding of the term "content" is a good start to understanding the companies that need content.

Online content today consists of:
*Web sales copy
*Filler
*Articles
*Online tutorials
*Online user manuals
*Newsletter writing
*Online press releases
*Online journalism
*Flash movie scripts
*Online game scripts
*Online ads "

Writing for the web goes way beyond sales copy to include interesting articles on the theme of the website, newsletters, surveys, discussion, interactive forums and email content.

Once you're surveyed the field, you should take a look at those sites which have a theme which is of particular interest to you. If home decor is your passion, take a look at a home decor site. If you are turned on by travel, take a look at a travel site.

The next step is to approach the editor or movers and shakers, sometimes a single owner behind the site. Ask if you can write articles for them. Have samples of your writing on display, even on your own website and contact potential website buyers to take a look. You might also post some of your articles on article websites where other websites can use them for free, and use that method as an entree to build links to your own website and get the word out on your area of expertise. After a few months go back and take a look at which websites have used your articles and contact them to see if they want more of the same, but articles which they pay for.

Be persistent and assertive, and keep writing about subjects you enjoy and you will move into that special arena of writers who make their living on the web.
